ONEN Bus Plan Petition

ONEN Bus Plan Petition

The ONEN Transit Committee (made up of representatives of all four north-south arterial streets) wrote the ONEN Bus Plan after a thorough analysis  of the bus routes through ONEN that 1) best serve the public transit system, 2) best serve the bus patrons who use the local amenities, and 3) respect the ONEN Master Plan. A version of this plan was presented at a public neighborhood meeting called by Chief-of-Staff Jeff Greene on June 20th. Here is the revised version of the plan:

  1. Keep a local bus to serve the Bon Shopping Center and other amenities down Wahsatch Avenue with an interval no shorter than 30 minutes as is appropriate for a local bus in a residential area.
  2. An optional direct bus serving the downtown and UCCS hubs is reasonable and acceptable down Cascade Avenue with an interval no shorter than 30 minutes. Any additional high-capacity public transit greater than standard 35-40′ buses shall use the I-25 corridor.
  3. Remove buses from busy and deadly Nevada Avenue through the Old North End and abandon the use of a transit lane down Nevada for future high-capacity transit.

We feel this plan achieves the following objectives:

  1. Maintains a virtual 15-minute interval between the downtown and UCCS hubs to attract choice riders and reduce car traffic.
  2. Improves bus patron access to the local amenities along Wahsatch Avenue while utilizing the existing ADA infrastructure.
  3. Adds an optional direct (express) bus route down Cascade Avenue to improve system efficiency and encourage bus usage over the use of cars while using existing ADA infrastructure.
  4. Increases safety by reducing the occurrence of car and pedestrian accidents on busy and deadly Nevada Avenue.
  5. Respects the ONEN Master Plan and City ordinance (law) by encouraging the distribution of non-local traffic while encouraging alternatives to automobile traffic within and through the neighborhood.
  6. Moves future high-capacity transit to the I-25 corridor and away from our historic districts.

The City does not want to adopt our plan because it is counter to their objective to create a core corridor down Nevada Avenue capable of serving expected growth around UCCS. This includes a transit (bus) lane down Nevada Avenue to possibly include future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is an inexpensive alternative to street cars and light rail for high-capacity public transit. Let out City officials know that high-capacity transit is appropriate down the I-25 corridor away from our historic districts.

If you agree with the ONEN Bus Plan to encourage public transit within reasonable limits, please help by signing the petition below.
